Particle capture by seagrass canopies under an oscillatory flow

چکیده
Although seagrass canopies are known to enhance particle sedimentation, there is still limited knowledge about how seagrasses modify the vertical distribution of sediment particles; especially when particles come from allochthonous sources. This study determined volume trapped by leaves, amount that remains in suspension both within and above canopy, deposited onto seabed. A set laboratory experiments were conducted which hydrodynamic conditions canopy densities varied mimic real field conditions. demonstrated quantified previously recorded observations concerning fate meadows. Seagrass meadows decreased suspended capturing on blades enhancing sedimentation However, whole increased with density reduced number canopy. The ecological implications significant, since a seabed covered vegetation, compared bare seabed, produced reduction improving water clarity. Furthermore, (compared substrates) enhanced denser was, greater

Flow in seagrass canopies: The influence of patch width
Seagrass beds and the communities they form are well known for their ability to alter their local hydrodynamic environment, reducing current velocities and altering turbulent structure in and around the canopy. Much of the quantitative information that has been published on the interaction of seagrass canopies with flowing water has been derived from laboratory flume studies. The few studies th...
متن کاملAttenuation of water flow inside seagrass canopies of differing structure
An understanding of how habitat structure influences physical environmental processes that are important to organisms utilizing the habitat is a necessary basis for predicting biological responses to habitat variation. Seagrass meadows represent an important coastal nursery habitat that modifies the local flow environment. We used basic fluid-dynamic balances to construct a simple model of the ...
متن کاملRipple Morphology under Oscillatory Flow
Our ultimate long-term goal is to further the understanding of bed morphology and sediment dynamics under oscillatory flows. Experiments will be conducted to expand existing data sets of sand bed morphology and evolution in large scale laboratory facilities under controlled flow conditions. Based on this additional insight from the improved data set we aim to advance presently available tools f...
متن کاملContribution of seagrass plants to CO2 capture in a tropical seagrass meadow under experimental disturbance
Coastal vegetative habitats are known to be highly productive environments with a high ability to capture and store carbon. During disturbance this important function could be compromised as plant photosynthetic capacity, biomass, and/or growth are reduced. To evaluate effects of disturbance on CO2 capture in plants we performed a five-month manipulative experiment in a tropical seagrass (Thala...
متن کاملAmmonium uptake by seagrass communities: effects of oscillatory versus unidirectional flow
Nutrient dynamics of aquatic communities are dependent on the flux of nutrients to organisms within the communities. Flux is dependent on water column concentration and hydrodynamic factors that affect both advection of nutrients through the community and rates of diffusion at the surfaces of organisms. In this study, we measured rates of ammonium uptake for a seagrass community under various h...
